![]() “But if you aren’t any religion,” asks Margaret’s friend, “how are you going to know if you should join the Y or the Jewish Community Center?” She puzzles over whether she should choose one religion over the other. ![]() ![]() It was about a girl trying to decide whether God really exists, about her dismay upon learning that her mother’s Christian parents disowned their daughter for marrying a Jew. “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” was also - and maybe even mostly - a story about an 11-year-old girl caught between the two belief systems of her parents’ families: Christianity and Judaism. I’m not sure it did, but we did love the book, and we discovered, to our delight, that it delved into topics even deeper than the physiological changes of the adolescent female body. ![]() Maybe a good novel would help pierce the veil of her denial? ![]()

![]() ![]() Sam then stuck rigidly to the authorized version. In Thud! we learn that the next day Young Sam said "Buglit!" (an attempt at Ron's distinctive "Buggrit!") and Sybil pointedly never raised the subject. He therefore attempts to rework the story into what he calls the 'Vimes street version', about a search for "daddy" through the city, encountering such characters as Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler, Foul Ole Ron, and the Patrician. Sam eventually decides that this is a daft way to look for a cow, and that Young Sam should, in any case, be getting taught about Ankh-Morpork rather than animals he will only see on a plate. ![]() The book describes the search for a cow, in which various animals that are not cows are identified by the noise they make. The book is written as a children's picture book and tells the story of Sam Vimes reading the picture book Where's My Cow? to Young Sam. This looks slightly similar to the Carnegie Medal sticker on the paperback of The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents. The cover bears a gold sticker reading " OOK! The Ankh-Morpork Librarians' Award - Children's Winner". Where's My Cow? was released on 23 September 2005, to coincide with Thud!. It is based on a book that features in Pratchett's Discworld novel Thud!, in which Samuel Vimes reads it to his son. Where's My Cow? is a picture book written by Terry Pratchett and illustrated by Melvyn Grant. ![]() ![]() ![]() The moral panic of the grease devil revealed popular-and ongoing-anxieties in post-war Sri Lanka. ![]() Eventually, the government felt compelled to respond: “The Grease Devil is not real,” they admonished, in a statement broadcast over a striking image purported to capture one such figure, who bared blood-reddened teeth set in a face painted white. Government officials dismissed complaints, while the Secretary of Defence joked that the grease devil might be the ghost of the Tamil Tigers’ dead leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran. Police spokesmen denied the existence of grease devils at community meetings and in media appearances. The suspects were met with vigilante violence, and were occasionally seen running into army camps or police stations for shelter. Stories of the assaults circulated through local rumor and newspaper articles but when no officials intervened, many accused the devils of being government soldiers, or at least protected by security forces. ![]() ![]() In August 2011, two years after the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka, villages throughout the country were haunted by “grease devils”-men who were once known as petty thieves, but now assaulted women and killed indiscriminately, their bodies smeared with oil to escape capture. The collected data has the potential of providing vital insight into the human experience, but can the scientific community explore the psychosocial experience of humanity without making victims of us all? Professor Thad Polk, of the University of Michigan, invites you to join him for Shocking Psychological Studies and the Lessons They Teach, a six-lecture course exploring a range of shocking psychological experiments from the past that have nonetheless contributed significant insight into the human condition. Virtually every aspect of human behavior is tracked millions of times a day through the technology that we all, often without giving it a thought, use every day. We live in a time of amazing new technologies-and an unparalleled level of surveillance. ![]() ![]() Children are not born with these understandings, so to make them understand pain, fear, and loss is no trivial thing. Once a body grows old enough, we are all saddened by the thought of a breakup. Good Children's literature is some of the most difficult literature to write because one must challenge, engage, please, and awe a mind without resorting to archetypes or life experience. It has been my policy that the best literature for children is not a trifling thing, not a simplification of the adult or a sillier take on the world. Children are first protected from their culture-kept remote and safe-and then they are thrust incongruously into a world that they have been told is unsafe and unsavory and we expected them not to blanch. I think that the failure not only of Children's Literature as a whole, but of our very concept of children and the child's mind is that we think it a crime to challenge and confront that mind. ![]() ![]() With danger closing in, Zima must unite the wolves, the witches and the villagers against an evil that threatens them all.
